Alumnus will direct Hockey Day Minnesota broadcast

St. Cloud Times — Matt Gangl decided to attend St. Cloud State University to become a TV meteorologist. It wasn’t to be.

“It was one of the few accredited meteorology programs that was close, plus it was great in broadcasting,” said Gangl, who grew up in Finlayson. “I came here and kind of got sick of calculus. I could do it, but I was like … ugh.

“I was already doing some TV stuff and found my way into sports and decided that this was my career path.”

He reached a pinnacle in TV sports production when he was the director for this year’s World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros for FOX.

Sports fans in the state have the chance to see his work regularly. He directs Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Twins broadcasts and other material for FOX Sports North.

Gangl is slated to direct FSN’s 2018 Hockey Day Minnesota broadcast, which will take place Jan. 20 at Eastman Park next to Lake George.
