ST. CLOUD TIMES — Brooks Bertsch ‘ 15 wants to be an executive for an NHL team one day.
So when Los Angeles Kings Vice President and General Manager Rob Blake had a conversation with the former St. Cloud State forward at the end of the season, a new role in the organization came up.
Bertsch, 28, spent the past two seasons as the Kings’ assistant video coordinator.
“(Blake) had made a comment to me earlier in the season about adding more resources to our scouting department,” Bertsch said. “My whole goal in hockey (operations) has been to get into management and video coaching was my avenue in.
“It helped me stay close to the locker room and stay close to the game and it gave me a lot of experience in pro hockey. I owe a lot to (Kings head coaches) John Stevens and Darryl Suter.”
But to get into management in an NHL organization, that role was not going to be enough. More moves would be needed for Bertsch, who never played pro hockey after finishing his college playing career and earning a finance degree at St. Cloud State.
