Sarsland to be inducted into MHCA Hall of Fame

Star News — Former Elk River hockey coach Tony Sarsland ’70 is set to be inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

In an announcement made by the association on Aug. 5, Sarsland was part of a five-member Hall of Fame class, which also includes Totino-Grace’s Mark Loahr, Lakeville North’s Randy Schmitz, Maple Grove’s Gary Stefano and Hermantown’s Bruce Plante. The five coaches will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in a noon ceremony on Sept. 22 at Roy Wilkens Auditorium in St. Paul. 

Prior to becoming Elk River’s head coach in 1985, Sarsland played hockey and got his degree at St. Cloud State University before starting his coaching career as an assistant at Hallock High School in 1970. He also had coaching stops at Columbia Heights and Beloit (Wisconsin).
