Two St. Cloud State University professors were honored with excellence in teaching awards from Minnesota State Colleges and University April 17.
Professors of the Department of Physics and Astronomy Kevin Haglin and John Sinko were presented the 2019 Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence in Teaching. They were nominated by St. Cloud State President Robbyn Wacker.
“Active engagement and outreach to students is a foundational principle in Dr. Haglin’s teaching philosophy and evident in his practice. His achievements in the field of physics are impressive, but equally so is his commitment to including students in both undergraduate and graduate research,” Wacker said.
“An amalgamation of content expert, coach, guide and academic advocate describe the foundation of Dr. Sinko’s teaching here at St. Cloud State,” said Wacker. “He views teaching as a serious endeavor and prepares for it accordingly by participating in numerous professional development opportunities on our campus.”
The Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities recognized six individuals in total from across the system for the excellence award.
These awards acknowledge and reward exceptional professional accomplishment, encourage ongoing excellence in teaching and take pride in the accomplishment of faculty who provide instruction that prepares Minnesota college and university students for their professional, scholarly and civic lives, according to a statement from the Board.
Additionally, St. Cloud State professors Matthew Julius, Department of Biology, and Nancy Sundheim, Department of Environmental and Technological Studies, were also nominated for Excellence in Teaching awards and were recognized as Outstanding Educators.
St. Cloud State’s Director of Alumni Relations Teresa Mische was also nominated for an Excellence in Service award.
These awards are conferred annually to college and university teaching faculty and university administrative service faculty to acknowledge and provide system-wide recognition for consistently superior professional achievement and to encourage the ongoing pursuit of excellence.
