Birthday Bash Cake
A giant 6 feet by 6 feet display cake was delivered to campus Tuesday and will be on display at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center during commencement ceremonies May 10 for photos. The cake will be part of upcoming Sesquicentennial events including the Lemonade Concert and Art Fair and 2019 Homecoming festivities.
The cake is becoming a Minnesota State anniversary tradition. St. Cloud State University inherited the cake from Minnesota State University, Mankato, which used it for its 150th celebration in 2018. The cake was originally designed and constructed by students at Rochester Community and Technical College for its centennial in 2015.
“This is becoming a wonderful tradition that not only helps us celebrate our 150-year legacy, but it also is a symbol of the longstanding impact Minnesota State as a system has on educating generations of Minnesota’s workforce,” said Adam Hammer, executive director of marketing and communications. “We plan to pass it on to another Minnesota State school. I’m excited to see where the cake lands next.”
Cakes — both real and display — have been a part of past St. Cloud State anniversary celebrations too.
In 1944 students dressed up in period costumes and decorated a large display cake in celebration of St. Cloud State’s 75th year.
Thirty-five years later as St. Cloud State celebrated 110 years a real cake mapped out the campus and its building footprint at that time topped with tiny cake buildings, said Tom Steman, university archivist.
