People gathered with a big pink St. C flag
Huskies wore their pink and came out to show their support for those with breast cancer at the Big PINK Picture at noon Oct. 22 followed by the Cancer Conversations in Atwood Memorial Center.
Remarks were given by breast cancer survivor Bernie Perryman in the companion event to Making Strides breast cancer fundraising walk Oct. 26 at St. Cloud State University.
Perryman was in her driveway when she got the call letting her know that something unusual was found in her breasts. She relied on a “dream team” of surgeons, oncologists and radiologists to provide her treatments, and a second dream team of family, friends and employees at her Batteries Plus Bulbs and others throughout the community to support her through treatment to where she is now — a survivor.
She said the experience has changed her outlook and values to focus more on family, friends and everyone around her.
“I couldn’t have more love than I have for people and my family,” she said. “… All that support has made me who I am and how I got through it.”
The event was planned and organized by Jen Johnson’s Community Health Event Planning class, which is also helping with set up for the walk on Friday and at the walk itself on Saturday.
Registration for the 12th annual walk begins at 7 a.m. in the field house at Halenbeck Hall. The opening ceremony is 8:30 a.m. The walk begins at 9 a.m. There is still time to join a team or donate to the event.
