Necessary Trouble is a student designed project in respect of George Floyd and in response to 400 years of racial oppression. The video is a collage of student submissions from the College of Liberal Arts and School of the Arts organized by students in CMST 210 Performance and Everyday Life and CMST 410 Contemporary Issues in Performance Studies in the Fall semester of 2020.
The title of the project is in reference to the great statesman and civil rights activist John Lewis (1940-2020) speaking atop the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.”
Through the creation of good and necessary trouble we intend to bring the kind of powerful and efficacious hope and understanding that is gleaned through the power of word, art, and performance.
