A newly-restructured program for driver education is being offered through St. Cloud State University’s Precision Driving Center of Minnesota, which provides driver safety and training courses taught by certified professionals.
SCSU’s Precision Driving Center of Minnesota was previously known as the Minnesota Highway Safety & Research Center. This community resource has had a passion for driver safety for the past 50 years, and it will continue to offer programming that benefits Minnesota drivers.
“As always, our goal is to leverage our partnerships and emphasize initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety in Minnesota,” said Mike Meehan, Director of the Precision Driving Center of Minnesota. “Our collaboration with Minnesota Towards Zero Deaths, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and local and state law enforcement has brought a wealth of expertise and resources to our program. Together, we’re not just educating drivers; we’re encouraging safer roads for everyone.”
A popular course is the 55+ Driver Discount Program, which has become more accessible due to recent changes in state law. The four-hour course can now be completed in-person, self-paced online or via a virtual classroom.
Drivers over the age of 55 can save 10% on their auto insurance upon completing the four-hour class. Drivers receive a certificate of completion to be turned into their insurance company for a discount on their annual premium.
From 2023 to 2024, the average cost of auto insurance in Minnesota increased by 26 percent. This affordable class aims to alleviate some of that financial burden.
“Our 55+ Driver Discount Program has undergone a complete transformation, ensuring that our learners experience more than just a 10% discount on their car insurance,” said Joshua Williquette, instructional designer at the Precision Driving Center of Minnesota. “We’ve revamped every aspect of our program to provide a dynamic, engaging, and modern learning experience.
“We offer in-person classes across the state, interactive virtual classes and flexible online self-paced training,” he added. “All learners will benefit from up-to-date information delivered by our certified instructors. We’ve introduced refreshed and visually appealing materials making sure our participants are engaged, well-informed and leave more confident on the road.”
Classes are available online or in-person at locations throughout the state. Register by calling (320) 308-1400 or visiting the Precision Driving Center website.
