SCSU alumna Anna Behning has been named a Sportscasters Talent Agency of America (STAA) All-American, which annually recognizes the most outstanding collegiate radio and TV sports broadcasters.
Behning graduated in May with a degree in Mass Communications and was a top-six finisher for the coveted Jim Nantz Award, presented to the top collegiate broadcaster by STAA since 2009.
“Anna stands out as a recent alumna who is not only dependable and motivated but also truly dedicated,” said Derrick Silvestri, SCSU TV Studio Manager and UTVS Advisor. “Her hard work and passion light the way for her future success.”
Behning recently accepted a position as a weekend morning anchor and reporter at KETV NewsWatch 7 in Omaha, Nebraska, where she will start in September.
“Entering my first year at SCSU in 2021, I had set goals for myself … the Jim Nantz Award being one of them,” Behning said. “I wanted to take advantage of the opportunities within the Mass Communications department to aid in the development of my broadcasting craft. The support I was blessed with along the way truly made all the difference.
“Thank you to my mentors, fellow UTVS and mass communications colleagues, and Jon Chelesnik at STAA for helping me reach my goals,” she added. “I am very proud to call myself an SCSU alumna. This is only the beginning and I cannot wait to continue my journey in TV broadcast journalism.”
SCSU mass communications students have a rich history of being honored as the nation’s best broadcasters. Behning was named All-America honorable mention last year, and Sam Goetzinger earned All-America honorable mention honors in 2022. Joe Scarrella and Kirsten Krull were also second-team All Americans in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
SCSU alumna Katie Emmer Storm is the only Husky to win the Jim Nantz award, also becoming the first female to win the award in 2018. She now is a host and reporter for Bally Sports North.
