St. Cloud State University’s Esports program hosted its highly anticipated annual regional event Northstar III on March 8th and 9th, bringing together fierce competitors nationwide.
The campus was buzzing with excitement as players battled it out in titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Rocket League, Valorant, Rivals of Aether 2, Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear Strive, and Tekken 8. The Atwood Ballroom and Huskies Esports Arena were filled with energy as passionate gamers pushed themselves to claim victory and, of course, have a great time.
Some electrifying moments occurred in all brackets, where champions were crowned in high-stakes matches. Peparony, representing North Dakota, took home the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trophy, while former Northstar champion Joey Donuts claimed victory once again in the Super Smash Bros. Melee bracket. In an exciting first, the Edgewood Eagles made their mark by snagging their first-ever Northstar win in Rocket League. Meanwhile, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities took home wins in titles like Ultimate Collegiate Crews and Valorant.
Northstar III also featured special events that showcased the spirit of inclusivity and creativity within the gaming community. The “Sweet vs. Sour” melee crew battle provided a platform for women gamers to shine. “Melee Triples” focused on the pure joy of team dynamics, offering a fresh and fun twist on traditional competition.
“St. Cloud State University continues to nurture a vibrant and welcoming esports culture, fostering opportunities for students and gamers,” said Justin Bragg, Director of Esports at SCSU. “With events like Northstar III, SCSU aims to create an ever-evolving, dynamic environment that enhances the local gaming scene and strengthens its presence within the broader collegiate esports community.”
