St. Cloud State University hosted over 200 students for the National History Day in Minnesota regional competition on Saturday.
The competition is a historical research program that builds college readiness and communication skills for students in grades 6-12. This year’s theme was “Rights and Responsibilities in History”.
SCSU students Sophia Kufalk and Isaac Lindquist served as SCSU mentors, working with area teachers and helping students to develop their projects.
SCSU Interim President Larry Dietz and State Senator Aric Putnam joined History Professor Rob Galler on the Ritsche Auditorium stage before awards were presented by the Minnesota Historical Society. SCSU and the Minnesota Historical Society have a decades-long partnership of helping make History Day a successful event.

“The event is a great example of a long tradition of collaboration that connects people from central Minnesota, pertaining to our common interest in studying our past and considering how it relates to our common future,” Galler said.
SCSU has hosted the regional contest for about 30 years, while National History Day began over 50 years ago. Event judges and staff included SCSU faculty and current students, instructors from area schools and colleges and alumni of SCSU’s history department that now work for the Minnesota Historical Society.
Winners advanced to the State History Day competition on April 27 at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
