Multiple individuals from St. Cloud State University will be involved in St. Cloud’s 14th annual MLK Community Celebration, which has events scheduled Jan. 17, 19 and 25.
This year’s theme is “From Compassion to Action Toward a Brighter Tomorrow.”
Dr. Ruthanne Kim, SCSU professor and faculty lead organizer for the Community Anti-Racism Education Initiative (CARE), is co-chair for the annual celebration.
“The MLK Celebration is a space where we commit not just to gathering, but to truly seeing and supporting our neighbors,” Kim said. “I stand with all who are seeking safety, connection and hope, and our committee remains dedicated to nurturing a community that is courageous, compassionate and unafraid to pursue truth and justice together.”
Create CommUNITY, a St. Cloud organization focused on taking strategic, measurable steps to dismantling racism through systemic change, is organizing the 2026 edition of the event.
Dr. Jason Woods, vice president for Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, will be serving as master of ceremonies for the MLK Community Breakfast on Jan. 19. Dr. LaDonna Butler is the keynote speaker for the event, which will also be livestreamed.
SCSU Men’s Basketball is also taking part by honoring the legacy of Dr. King during their game against Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. There is free admission for any fan who donates a non-perishable food item. A portion of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech will be read during warm-ups and there will also be MLK trivia and a T-shirt giveaway.
