St. Cloud Times — Events in the past several years have linked bullying at school directly with high profile cases of students taking their own lives.
Two St. Cloud State University professors recently conducted research to determine whether this connection held up under academic scrutiny.
Is bullying correlated with suicides in students?
The simple answer: yes.
John Hoover, a special education professor, with Tim Baker, an associate professor in the community psychology, counseling and family therapy program, is working to develop models to predict suicidality from bullying. Models would look at suicide ideation, suicide attempts and completed suicides.
The two used a statewide survey of about 800,000 ninth- and 11th-graders taken each year in Minnesota. Out of that, about 55,000 answered all the questions they needed for the study.
