St. Cloud Times — Xcel Energy customers are paying $5.5 million for research at Minnesota higher education institutions through the company’s Renewable Development Fund.
The money is going to the Minnesota Energy Center, one of eight Centers of Excellence in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, or MnSCU.
That center is a mobile programming effort led by Bruce Peterson, executive dean of academic initiatives at St. Cloud Technical & Community College.
Peterson said the $5.5 million will pay for two rounds of grants to four- and two-year schools. Up to 14 projects can receive funding, he said, and the maximum for any one project is $750,000.

Principal investigators from St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato will monitor projects and help keep them on track, Peterson said.
