Stephen Philion is the recipient of the Distinguished Sociologist Award from the Sociologists of Minnesota (SoM).
The sociology professor, department chairperson, author and activist will be honored at the SoM annual conference Sept. 30 in Atwood Memorial Center.
Philion exceeded expectations for the Distinguished Sociologist Award with “tireless efforts in the promotion of labor rights for migrant workers, your on-campus activities with both students and community via the Global Goes Local conference, and the mentorship you provide student-scholars, who routinely go on to place favorably in the SoM student paper competition,” said SoM President Ronald Ferguson.
Philion founded the Greater Minnesota Worker Center, a St. Cloud nonprofit organization that organizes, advocates and empowers low-wage workers. He will speak at Friday’s luncheon and lead two panel discussions.
He is a founder, member and former director of the Faculty Research Group on Immigrant Workers, St. Cloud State’s interdisciplinary think tank on immigrant workers’ experiences in Minnesota labor markets. The research group’s conference, is a free, annual outreach effort that features presentations and panel discussions.
Philion contributed a chapter to “The Cambridge Handbook of Service Learning and Community Engagement,” a 2016 publication of Cambridge University Press, the world’s oldest publishing house.
In 2012, he authored “Workers’ Democracy in China’s Transition from State Socialism,” for Routledge Press.
