TAP into Greater Olean – Opening exhibitions of his work is not Wayne Claypatch’s ’92 favorite part of being an artist.
“I may look like I’m outgoing, but I’m actually not that comfortable with being the center of attention,” said the 60-year-old Owego resident the night his “Out of the Frying Pan” exhibit opened at the Olean Public Library. “I think people do art and then have openings, and they think this is really the fun part. But for me it’s a little unnerving. I’m kind of quiet.”
The exhibit, hosted by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, won best of show at the 2015 Southern Tier Biennial art competition. Claypatch’s work was selected by two jurors from more than 165 pieces of work submitted by a total of 62 artists. About 15 visitors stopped in during the first hour of opening night.

One way the St. Cloud State University alum overcomes his introverted nature is to draw upon his experiences teaching art. He taught at St. Cloud State and Broome Community College in Binghamton and also spent five years teaching at various Minnesota prisons.
