Mark Rhodes
Mark Rhodes ‘13 recently accepted a position as an assistant professor of geography at Michigan Technological University.
At Michigan Tech, Rhodes will teach courses with titles such as Contemporary Europe, Global Issues and Industrial Communities. With master’s and doctoral research centered on geographies of memorialization, heritage, and history, one of his responsibilities will be to develop curriculum and support Michigan Tech’s graduate programs in Industrial Heritage.
Rhodes earned his bachelor’s degree in geography with a minors in British studies, intercultural communications and GIS. He also earned a B.E.S. in music, where he played trumpet for St. Cloud State University’s orchestras and bands.
“I think the geography department uniquely sets students up for success in graduate programs,” Rhodes said.
While at St. Cloud State, Rhodes was involved in Gamma Theta Upsilon (an honors society), presented at regional and national conferences, and studied abroad at Alnwick Castle and with Gareth John’s “Castles, Crags, and Coastlines” study abroad course.
Rhodes is excited to start at Michigan Tech this fall. He plans to expand ongoing research in Wales, develop study abroad courses, and become better acquainted with the industrialization and de-industrialization of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
