Mass Communications students working for Husky Productions and UTVS earned a number of awards this April from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Eighteen students won a combined 12 awards from the three organizations. Each of the named honorees were supported by a full crew of students who worked on each of the shows and productions, and while the awards honor producers, directors and talent, the work of all students on the crew contributed to the honors.
National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Upper Midwest Foundation Awards
Six students earned Student Production Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Upper Midwest Foundation for their work in sports and news reporting, producing and editing April 2 at the Midwest Journalism Conference in Minneapolis.
Parker Kayser and Sam Goetzinger earned recognition in the Sports Program category for a “Husky Mag” episode. Joey Erickson and Paige Jaeger won in the Live Sporting Event/Game category for their production of “St. Cloud State vs. Colorado College”. Elliot Knight won in the Editor category and Nick Maxson won in the Talent: News or Sports category.
The awards encourage students to continue the pursuit of excellence in studying media and journalism and to draw public attention to outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news and information achievements by students.
Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Eric Sevareid Awards
Alex Cotter and Kimberly Gomez came in with First Place awards in the Eric Sevareid Awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association.
Cotter took first place in the Sports Reporting category for “Celebrating and Wishing Tom Nelson a Happy Retirement, while Gomez took a first place award in the Weather category for her Nov. 3 broadcast.
Jacob Palm, Ryan McNamara and Conner Cook earned an Award of Merit for an episode of their “Crunch Time” program and Gianna Njau and Jacinda Phan earned An Award of Merit in the Talk/Public Affairs category for an episode of “The Culture”. Kevin Bloemberg and Jaelyn Borreson each took home an Award of Merit in the Weather category for their November broadcasts.
The Eric Sevareid Awards are named for the North Dakota-board and University of Minnesota-educated journalist best know for his work as a correspondent for CBS Radio and Television. Presented each spring, the awards honor the best work done by student and professional journalists working for broadcast news operations in small, medium and large markets in the six-state Midwest region.
Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards
Nyah Adams, Steven Schroeder and Joseph Bahr earned two Best All-Around Television Newscast Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for their UTVS News broadcasts on Nov. 3 and Nov. 10.
The Mark of Excellence Awards honor the best in student journalism.
