Common Strands
As you enter the building, look down where you’ll see Common Strands on the entryway floor.
Created in 2004 for the new west addition of the Atwood Memorial Center, Common Strands was designed by sculptors Stanton Gray Sears and Andrew Myklebust. The concept for Commons Strands relates to weaving and map making with intersecting lines converging at the entry This is a metaphor for the process of education where many individuals gather to create a community.
Common Strands centers on an oval-shaped element measuring 18 feet across with metal lines intersecting the oval at various points. It represents how different cultures and people are woven together. The blue line (with tan periodically inside as islands) snakes through the oval centerpiece and much of the floor nearby which represents the Mississippi River.
Atwood Theatre Lounge Mural
The murals on the wall located to the right of the Alumni Room honor the university’s past and present and celebrate the promise of the future. The murals were created through leadership and funding of the St. Cloud State University Alumni Association.
The lounge is also home to the Atwood Gallery that often hosts displays of community artwork and special exhibits throughout the academic year.
