“Left-Hand Paths” an exhibit by David Ruhlman and Andy Messerschmidt opens Aug. 24 in the Kiehle Gallery on the St. Cloud State University campus.
The exhibit runs through Sept. 22 and explores the connections between the divine and cultural underdogs. Using metaphors ranging from parade waves to doing laying of hands, Ruhlman and Messerschmidt find magic in everyday images and objects. The artists combine a plethora of two-dimensional work that engages the public is a full, often frenetic visual expression.
The Department of Art will hold an opening reception in the gallery at 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. Ruhlman and Messerschmidt will give an artist talk in the gallery beginning at 1:30 p.m. during the reception and the talk is open to the public.
David Ruhlman is a visual artist and educator. In 2011 he received a BA in art history at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and in 2020 an MFA at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Ruhlman is a 2014 recipient of a Central Minnesota Arts Board grant and has exhibited across the country with notable exhibitions at DAAP Galleries at the University of Cincinnati and a solo show at Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York.
Andy Messerschmidt is a visual artist and educator. In 1999 he received a BFA at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, and in 2002 an MFA at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Messerschmidt is the recipient of three Minnesota State Arts Board grants with notable exhibitions at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, ArtLA in Los Angeles and the Nemeth Art Center in Park Rapids.
Kiehl Gallery is located in the Kiehle Visual Arts Center on the Campus of St. Cloud State University. The gallery hours are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
