St. Cloud State Professor receives 2022 ASHE Individual Service Award

The American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE) recently announced that St. Cloud State University Professor of Economics Dr. Monica García-Pérez has received the 2022 ASHE Individual Service Award for the work she has devoted to ASHE.

“I am deeply honored by this award and the recognition of my service to ASHE,” Dr. García-Pérez. “All previous individual service awardees have devoted their professional life to elevate the Economics profession with their research and their commitment to elevate their colleagues and the community along this professional journey. It is now humbling to be part of them.”

Dr. García-Pérez has been a Professor in the St. Cloud State Department of Economics since 2009, with her research concentrating on health economics, immigration, and labor economics. She also works on wealth inequality across race/ethnicity and the impact of health shocks. Her research also looks at the intergenerational effects of barriers to access to health care and health coverage.

Dr. García-Pérez is currently the Director of the St. Cloud State Faculty Research Group of Immigrant Workers in Minnesota, is a Senior Research Associate at The Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University, and served as President of the ASHE Board in 2020.

ASHE is a professional association of economists concerned with the under-representation of Hispanic Americans in the economics profession. ASHE strives to promote the vitality of Hispanics in the economics profession through education, services and excellence, while promoting rigorous research on economic and policy issues affecting U.S. Hispanic communities and the nation as a whole. ASHE also engages more Hispanic Americans to effectively participate in the economics profession.
