St. Cloud State University student Lilly Marohn recently won a regional scholarship at the Student Production Awards – National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Upper Midwest Foundation.
The Mass Communications and Journalism major was awarded the Ulysses Carlini Media Scholarship, receiving $1,500 for tuition and books for the fall semester.
Marohn is the News Director for UTVS. She creates and advises on weekly, local newscasts at the student-run station and has worked as an anchor, reporter and producer.
“It was such an honor to receive the Ulysses Carlini Media Scholarship,” Marohn said. “I was overwhelmed by the generous donation from the Ulysses family. Not only is this scholarship helpful for funding my education at St. Cloud State, but I also think it is great to honor Carlini’s legacy with this scholarship.”
Carlini began his television career in 1953, serving in different roles as producer, program director and vice president/general manger at TV stations in Kentucky, Indiana and Nebraska. He also served the National Broadcasting Association as board member in the 1970’s. His family has honored his legacy with the Carlini Media Scholarship, given to college students seeking to create media enjoyable for the whole family. It also searches for students seeking management and leadership roles in the media industry.
“We take pride in knowing our students are being rewarded for their superior academic work and their success is being celebrated through scholarship awards,” said Derrick Silvestri, UTVS TV Studio Manager, UTVS Advisor and Adjunct Professor.
It was an overwhelming weekend for Marohn in late March, who accepted a job at WCCO-TV with CBS News Minnesota as an assignment editor the day prior to earning the scholarship.
Marohn plans to graduate SCSU in the spring of 2024.
