St. Cloud Times — Friday night was “like going through hell and back” for Prakriti Maskey.
The St. Cloud State junior spent eight hours wondering whether her mother had been injured or worse in the earthquake that shook Nepal and caused more than 2,000 reported deaths as of Sunday. She spent all night trying to call her mom, and sending Facebook messages to relatives. Finally, Maskey’s mother got the message and called her to quickly say she was OK before losing connection.

Prakriti is the president of the Nepalese Students Association at SCSU. The group hosted an emergency meeting Saturday to check in with many of the school’s approximately 145 students from Nepal. Prakriti said she did not believe any of the students’ direct family members died, though one student lost a cousin. Many of the students have families that live in the Kathmandu valley, the area hit hardest by the quake.
