A generation ago, soccer was as welcome in America as the metric system. The rest of the world adored The Beautiful Game. We ignored it. Well, not everyone ignored soccer. Many cared enough to despise it.
Kylie Cleary, a star for St. Mary’s soccer team, dwells in a different, improved America. She spent last Sunday afternoon watching the United States women’s team roar to a dominating victory over Japan in the World Cup final.

Cleary, who will play next season at St. Cloud State in Minnesota, believes tens of thousands of girls started dreaming big while watching Sunday. For decades, boys watched baseball, basketball and football and imagined themselves on the field, earning a living for playing a game.
