Interim President Dietz begins academic year with convocation address

Interim President Larry Dietz welcomed faculty and staff to the start of the 2024-25 academic year on Tuesday morning in Ritsche Auditorium, giving his first President’s Convocation Address to kick off a week of faculty/staff development ahead of the first day of classes on Aug. 26. 

“Our work now is to focus on student success,” he added. “Let’s work together with shared values, shared governance and a shared commitment to students, so we can be proud when they walk across the stage as our graduates.”

Interim President Dietz joins Mayor’s town hall to focus on collaboration

St. Cloud State University’s Interim President Larry Dietz joined St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis to answer questions from the community on Aug. 6 on the Eastman Hall patio, prioritizing strengthening partnerships between the University and the City of St. Cloud.

“It’s critical that the University and the city are hand-in-hand … there’s a strong desire for collaboration,” Kleis, an SCSU alum, said. “That’s what’s going to help the University and help the city in working together.”

Interim president hopes to help SCSU find path forward

MPR — Larry Dietz spent 50 years as a higher education administrator, most recently as president of Illinois State University, before retiring in 2021.

It was the opportunity to help another, albeit smaller, Midwestern institution facing significant challenges that lured him out of retirement. Dietz, who started last week as interim president of St. Cloud State University, said he wasn’t looking for a long-term gig, but missed being involved in higher education.

The Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities has named Larry Dietz to serve as interim president of St. Cloud State University (SCSU). The appointment will be effective beginning July 1, 2024.

“I am pleased that Dr. Dietz has agreed to come out of retirement and lead St. Cloud State University as interim president for the next two years,” said Scott Olson, chancellor of Minnesota State.
