The workshops, which are free and open to the public, are designed to inform and give attendees a chance to ask questions about their controversial subject matter, said Ben Bourgoin, SRSO co-leader.
“There is controversy, misinformation and misconceptions in many of the topics we are covering,” he said. “If we do our job correctly, we will dispel some myths about sex and immigration. … We believe the key to solving social and environmental issues begins with these two steps: dispelling myths and listening well.”
Presenting students include:
- Britton Mikkelsen, Lincoln, Neb.
- Whitney Ambrosch, St. Cloud
- Iresha Herath, St. Cloud
- Preeti Yonjon, St. Cloud
- Benjamin Bourgoin, Inver Grove Heights
“I’m certain participants will walk away more enlightened and informed about the issues, but I’m hoping they will also see and adopt the type of critical thinking that we are doing,” Bourgoin said. “… What I’d really like to see on a massive scale long run is people criticizing the news or being brave enough to ask questions or speak up about their opinions throughout their lives. That is where change really starts to happen.”
The workshop series is made possible by a grant from the St. Cloud State Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
