The St. Cloud State University Foundation received a major gift from Evan and Charles Merz to establish a scholarship fund in memory of their mother, Amanda Blume, for education majors.
Blume graduated from St. Cloud State in 1907, and spent most of her career teaching in rural Wright County. Her passion for teaching and education motivated her sons to create the Amanda Blume Education Scholarship to assist students of great academic achievement to pursue their educational passions.
“Several years ago, I was talking with a gentleman that was one of my mother’s students. He commented what an outstanding teacher she was and that there should be more teachers like her,” Evan Merz said. “Our families created this scholarship to assist in the development of future outstanding teachers.”
This scholarship, available for the first time in 2016, will provide $1,000 to qualified students who graduated from Monticello High School who are majoring in an education field.
“The Amanda Blume Educational Scholarship is very important to St. Cloud State University,” said Matt Andrew, Vice President for University Advancement. “The SCSU Foundation is focused on providing more scholarship opportunities for our students, and the establishment of this scholarship fund assists us greatly in sharpening our focus.”
