St. Cloud Times — Back in mid-January, a new radio station began broadcasting from the hallowed basement of Stewart Hall at St. Cloud State University. Dubbed as 97.5 RadioX (97.5 FM), it was promised to deliver us back to the extravagant days of 1990s indie rock. When I first read about the new station, it was reported that it would be “playing everything from Nirvana to Sugar Ray.”
To me, that seemed like a pretty narrow scope. My first notion was to say, well, I can’t wait to wade through Hootie & the Blowfish, the Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra and the Dave Matthews Band.
I will admit I was totally into the indie scene in the ’90s, and Nirvana is still one of my favorite bands. However, I feel that I walked the fringes of the indie scene tending to go for acts such as Guided by Voices, Mudhoney, Spiritualized, Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips. On the other hand, I did like a number of bands that hit the big-time mainstream: Oasis, Blur and Soundgarden, just to name a few.
