Thanks to a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, St. Cloud State will offer scholarships to 45 students who pursue degrees in 4+1 Information Assurance, Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering.

Applications for a two-year scholarship of up to $12,000 will be accepted Aug. 1-Sept. 10. Select applicants will be interviewed about the middle of September. Scholarships will be funded by a $614,000 grant from NSF, the top federal agency supporting non-medical science and engineering research and education.

Forty-five students will earn scholarships, thanks to a National Science Foundation grant.Preference will be given to:

  • Academically talented and financially needy students
  • Females
  • Students of color
  • Native Americans
  • First-generation students
  • Community college transfer students

The Computing and Engineering Scholarship Program (CESP) grant was secured by Susathana Herath, professor of information systems; Jayantha Herath, professor of computer science; and Mahbub Hossain, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

The CESP grant builds on the successes of a previous S-STEM project at St. Cloud State and will continue to benefit Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs at the University. It also will continue the development and enhancement of student support structures and increase SCSU’s contributions to the national need for STEM graduates.

St. Cloud State was awarded a $600,000 grant from the NSF in 2012 for S-STEM scholarships.

Among the CESP collaborators are Dennis Guster, professor of information systems; Robert C. Johnson, professor of ethnic studies; and Ben Baliga, professor of mechanical and manufacturing engineering.

Scholarship recipients will be assigned a faculty mentor, a graduate assistant and senior student support person.
