Search planned for signs of settlers fort at SCSU

St. Cloud Times — A Minnesota Historical Society grant will fund archaeologists’ search for the remains of Fort Holes, a U.S.-Dakota War-era settlers fort believed to have stood on the St. Cloud State University campus.

The project “Fortifying St. Cloud: Searching for Fort Holes, a Dakota Conflict Era ‘Settlers Fort’ ” is scheduled to get underway this month.

Rob Mann, assistant anthropology professor at St. Cloud State, said work would start with a graduate student’s gradiometer survey at two open, grassy sites — one near the tennis courts by Halenbeck Hall, the second near Lindgren Child Care Center.
