Tired of keeping track of assignments in his planner and misplacing his printed schedule, St. Cloud State student Guled Ahmed decided to do something about it and created Studious, an IOS app to help students keep track of assignments, take notes and keep in touch with their professors.

“I set out, during those moments of frustration, to design an app that would not only remind me of when my assignments were due, but also help me keep track of my course schedule, email my professors and take a couple of short notes,” he said.
Today students can use Studious to:
- Add homework assignments, exams, professors emails, and their course schedule
- Receive notifications on when assignments are due and when exams are coming up close
- Take notes
- Email professors within the app
- Add a location to their particular course
- Scan and print documents from within the app
Ahmed began developing the app in December 2014 and worked on it during his free time between studying for courses for his computer science major. He released the app six months later. It is currently available for download for 99 cents from the Apple App Store iPhone or iPod touch.
“Everything, from designing the app to actually developing the app, was self-taught,” he said. “I’m an advocate of autodidacticism, self-teaching has really helped me get hands-on experience with skills that aren’t taught in our university.”
Patience and a lot of research were required to build the app, which crashed a lot in the beginning, he said.
Ahmed turned to his brothers, high school students Mustaf and Khalid, to help refine the design for a better user experience.
“After a couple of months of research and learning about design as well as getting help from my siblings, I finally was able to make Studious a stable, yet beautiful app,” Ahmed said.
He is now working to create an Android version of Studious along with versions that can run on Apple and Android watches. He plans to continuously add new features to improve the app and make it an essential part of a student’s workflow.
