Harold Webber ’82 has been recognized for his 33-year dedication to refereeing volleyball.
The referee for national professional and amateur volleyball earned the 2015 Phil Mazur Outstanding Official Award from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) for embodying both the professionalism and enjoyment of the game.
During his refereeing career Webber has judged games for USA volleyball, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), AAU and the National Intercollegiate Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
He has refereed 10 national championships — including serving as a line judge for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
“(When refereeing) you see the interplaying of the game, and it just grows on you. You see how it should be played. You see how teams work together,” he said. “As a referee I get to see all these things. I’ve got the best seat in the house.”
He also coached for one year at St. Pius X High School in Atlanta and still plays himself in an amateur volleyball league.
When he’s not refereeing, Webber runs a pressure washing business that he owns.
Webber got his start in refereeing volleyball while at St. Cloud State when then head coach Dianne Glowatzke taught him to ref and connected him with the local high schools where he refereed throughout his college career.
“All of this goes back to honor her as well,” he said. “I also go out now and train people how to ref.”
