Monroe News — As a black man who was raised in the projects of the Deep South, C. Willi Myles first thought ice fishing involved scrounging poor folks instead of being a sport.
But when he moved up to Minnesota to attend college, culture shock hit him like an icy blast from a Polar Vortex. And when he ventured onto the frozen surface of a lake and heard the cracking, Mr. Myles knew he wasn’t cut out for ice fishing.
“I’m thinking I’m gonna die,” he said. “Y’all crazy. Black people know there’s water underneath there. Black people use a boat. That’s how we fish.”
Mr. Myles and his stand-up comedy act are coming Saturday to Monroe County Community College for a performance heavy on cultural humor but with none of the offensive language or topics that many comedians rely on.

A native of Mobile, Ala., Mr. Myles attended St. Cloud State University in central Minnesota on a football scholarship. He had no idea what he was getting himself into.
“When they said “north” I was thinking Tennessee,” he said. “That was before the Weather Channel.”
