Humble huts handled SCSU enrollment surge after WWII

A poem by Waite Park resident Mary Willette Hughes describes the Quonset housing she and her husband lived in for four years.

It was the student housing St. Cloud State University offered at Selke Field after World War II.

Due to the passage of the GI Bill of Rights and a lack of urban housing, thousands of military veterans sought living space at or near local colleges and universities.

St. Cloud State University was St. Cloud State College at the time. It was one of hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States to provide that housing.
