A St. Cloud State University building will soon be marked with its place in history.
The Riverview building will hold an unveiling ceremony of the National Register of Historic Places building plaque 11 a.m. April 13 in front of Riverview.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the nation’s official list of historic and archaeological resources deemed worthy of preservation.
Emeritus professor Bill Morgan will speak about the history of the building. Morgan was instrumental in getting Riverview on the Historic Register. It is the only building on campus to be honored with the historic mark.
Morgan says the building will finally be “complete.”
President Earl H. Potter III will also make remarks at the ceremony.
The event is sponsored by Learning Resources Services and the Department of Communication Studies.
Opened in fall 1913, Riverview served as St. Cloud State’s campus laboratory school until the fall of 1958. Teachers in-training would observe “master” teachers working with children and do their own student teaching.
Riverview became the home of the Division of Languages and Literature, and later, the Department of English, until 2008.
After a $6.2 million total renovation was completed in 2009, Riverview became the home for the Department of Communication Studies. The renovation won a Restoration/Rehabilitation Award from the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota in 2010.
