Kelly Kulzer-Reyes loves her lemonade, and she received national recognition for related efforts Tuesday.
The Cathedral High School graduate said she never expected to have a child with Down syndrome. But she did in 2012, when her daughter Amelia was born at St. Cloud Hospital.
Kulzer-Reyes and her husband Moises Reyes had a child with a nontypical chromosome — their lemons. So they would make some lemonade, she said.
The couple “wouldn’t trade our lives for anything,” Kulzer-Reyes said from the U.S. capital Tuesday. She was in the city to receive a DS Ambassador of the Year award from the National Down Syndrome Society, or NDSS.
The bilingual Sauk Rapids native with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from St. Cloud State University also has created two community groups in south-central California. One is a family-focused group, and the other is centered around lobbying efforts.
