St. Cloud State — Jessica Lourey ’96 ’98 is all about authenticity.
“If it is an authentic story, I guarantee people will want to read it,” Lourey says from her kitchen table at her home near the Mississippi River in St. Cloud. “That’s the one universal truth of writing.”
So when it comes to her upcoming TEDx talk in Rapid City, South Dakota, she plans on being candid and frank during her allotted 18 minutes — and maybe a little funny, too.

Lourey received her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in creative writing from St. Cloud State, followed by her master’s in teaching college English and social responsibility. Her master’s thesis at St. Cloud State University became her first novel, which Lourey describes as “a really thinly veiled autobiography” and by which Lourey is so retroactively embarrassed that she attempted to steal it from the local library before being persuaded by the librarian to allow students to “learn from mistakes”.
