RIO DE JANEIRO – Heather Miller-Koch’s Olympic heptathlon debut had a delightful finish, even if it didn’t bring overall satisfaction on Saturday night at Olympic Stadium.
The 2010 St. Cloud State graduate closed it by winning her 800-meter heat, which put a smile on her face even while it doubled her over with fatigue.
“Definitely a nice way to finish,” she said. “Not a great score. I had some bright spots. Last night (Friday) was pretty rough for me. Coming back this morning I had two pretty solid events, nothing great, but I knew I was in shape to run a good 800. I just had to trust my training and put a personal best out there. It was a great way to end the competition.”
Miller-Koch finished in 18th place with 6,213 points. Her 2:06.82 in the 800 was best among all 29 competitors and worth 1,012 points and hoisted her up four spots.
