A somber salute, a moment of silence

A somber salute. A moment of silence. The poignant notes of “Taps” lingering in the morning breeze.

Students and employees gathered Sept. 9 to salute the lives lost and sacrifices made on 9/11 and in the War on Terror.

The observance was led by Brandon Askin, president of the Student Veterans Organization (SVO).

“The sacrifices we’ve had to endure, and the pain we have suffered, is a testament to all those who lost their lives on that fateful day almost 15 years ago,” said Askin, a mechanical engineering major, Afghan War veteran and father of two boys.

Four attacks on September 11, 2001, killed 2,996 people and injured more than 6,000 others.

Assisting in the ceremony were:

Alix Wilke, SVO vice president

Jim Huston, SVO member

Joe Rath, SVO member

Joseph Brough, trumpet player

Dan McClure ’03 ’14, St. Cloud Police Department

ROTC cadets of the Fighting Saints Battalion

Zac Mangas, director of the Veterans Resources Center
