Signs of fall: Dock removal on the Mississippi River

St. Cloud Times— A round of rock, paper, scissors usually decides who’ll strip off their waders and sweatshirt to jump in the water and dislodge whatever’s holding up end-of-the-season dock or lift removal.

But Saturday morning, Jared Hall’s time had come.

It was the second day on the job for the 19-year-old St. Cloud State University nursing student, who signed on with Westre’s Marine & Sport’s dock and lift services crew. On Saturday, he was on a four-person crew of St. Cloud State students removing Adrian Seguin’s 20-foot dock and lift from the Mississippi River.

Air temperature was in the high 50s. Hall shivered. Looked reluctant.

It’ll feel warmer once you jump in, Mitch Brown, 23, an education major who started with Westre’s Marine eight months ago, said over the idling four-wheeler. Hall still didn’t look convinced. He waded in, immersed himself with a bit of a yelp, clung to the lift’s framework.
