St. Cloud Times — This time, the goalie needed saving.
Former St. Cloud State University goaltender Brian Leitza had a fall from grace that he could not have comprehended when he was playing hockey.
Before getting to St. Cloud State, he had his number retired by the Sioux City Musketeers after playing three seasons for the junior team in the United States Hockey League.
He turned down scholarship offers from Michigan and Notre Dame to play for the Huskies.
From 1994-98 with the Huskies, Leitza earned WCHA All-Academic team honors three times. He was his team’s MVP twice. An All-WCHA second team pick his senior season. All-WCHA Rookie Team his freshman season.
After St. Cloud State, he was paid to play pro hockey through the first half of the 2003-04 season. A knee injury ended his career and introduced him to painkillers.
