Savage Pacer — When you step inside Kathryn Petri’s art classroom at Harriet Bishop Elementary School in Savage, it could be considered a playground compared to the average classroom.
There are giant Crayon-shaped decorations hanging from the ceiling, paint brushes and other artists’ tools throughout the room, and colorful pictures galore. There are lamps of many different colors, dolls, maps and inspirational messages.

This kind of creativity and student engagement won Petri some major recognition. In early November, she received the Minnesota Art Educator of the Year award. To win this award, she had to get recommendations from colleagues who spoke about her ability to teach, engage students, be creative and love what she does every day.

She received another undergraduate degree in art education from St. Cloud State University and later received her master’s from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in education, visual and media arts education, curriculum and development.
