KNSI — If it seems like President Obama commuted a lot of sentences during his two terms as President, you’re right.
“He’s actually set a record for the number of sentences he’s commuted,” said St. Cloud State Political Science Professor Jim Cottrill.
“But on the other hand, with the pardon power, he’s used it far less than other presidents.”
One of Barack Obama’s most controversial commutations was for Chelsea Manning, on her sentence for leaking classified military documents.
“When the sentence was 35-years, it was a shock and her lawyers basically made that a part of the argument,” Cottrill said.
Manning, pictured below, has served seven years of her sentence for violating the Espionage Act for giving thousands of classified documents to Wikileaks in 2010.
