Benefactor and son of G.R. Herberger dies at 79

Gary K. Herberger, son of G.R. Herberger, died Feb. 28 after a heart attack earlier in the month.

In 1999, the Herberger family, founders of Herberger’s department store in 1927, endowed St. Cloud State University’s College of Business and it was renamed the G.R. “Bob” Herberger College of Business. It is the the single largest gift St. Cloud State has received.

The Herberger’s were also generous donors to the Centennial Hall campaign in the early 2000’s, to help renovate Centennial Hall.

In 2007, the G.R. Herberger College of Business moved into the renovated Centennial Hall. The new facility enhanced the college’s ability to educate students and serve the business community.

In 2011, the college was renamed the Herberger Business School.

Gary was the chair of the Herberger Foundation and worked as an architect before switching to real-estate development as the head of Herberger Enterprises.
