ST. CLOUD TIMES — Katie Emmer remembers when she was trying to figure out which college she was going to transfer to and her surprise at her father’s suggestion.
Emmer had attended the University of Hawaii-Hilo for a semester, but the cost of attending was too high.
“I was working a full-time job to pay back that bill to Hawaii and I was looking at going to school in Los Angeles and New York, one of these big areas,” she said. “My dad (Rep. Tom Emmer) had just got done touring the mass comm department at St. Cloud State and told me I should look into it.
“I thought it was too close to home, but it ended up being the top school to go to.”
Emmer, who turns 23 in July, has been a mass communications major at St. Cloud State since fall 2015. Friday, she became the first woman to receive the Jim Nantz Award as the College Sportscaster of the Year. Nantz is a CBS sportscaster who has worked on telecasts of the NFL, NCAA Division I men’s basketball and the PGA Tour.
