Four St. Cloud State University students made sure that history kept moving March 16 as they helped presenters find their spots, parents navigate buildings and kept judges on track at the annual Central Minnesota History Day.

Three hundred middle and high school students gathered on campus to present the results of their historical research in Atwood and Stewart Hall. The presentations included individual and group exhibits, performances, documentaries papers and websites on the 2019 theme “Triumph and Tragedy in History”. The projects ranged on topics from the Hinckley Fire to the Stonewall Riots.

St. Cloud State students Jennifer Sonterre, Mohamed Mohamud, Michelle Skroch and Kylee Glen are History Day interns this semester, who have spent months serving as advisers for students assisting them with research and advice on their presentations.

For many of the participants, it was the first time they presented their work to audiences outside of their classrooms.

Joining the History Day interns in helping the day run smoothly were St. Cloud State history students, alumni and faculty members who served as judges.

This included Emerti Professor Betsy Glade who organized this collaborative program for many years to link St. Cloud State to local schools.

“The experiences prepare college students for futures in teaching and public history while helping secondary schools and their students develop critical research, thinking and writing skills,” said Rob Galler, this year’s faculty organizer.

The Central Minnesota regional history contest serves as a setting for connections between St. Cloud State and more than a dozen area schools. Winners from the competition move on to the state competition in May at the University of Minnesota.
