Nonprofit co-founder talks leadership, community involvement for Muslim women at SCSU

ST. CLOUD TIMES —  A Minneapolis nonprofit wants to raise the visibility and civic participation of Muslim women, according to one of its co-founders who spoke Wednesday at St. Cloud State University. 

Nausheena Hussain co-founded Reviving the Islamic Sisterhood for Empowerment (RISE) in 2015. Hussain spoke at St. Cloud State as part of the Women’s Center’s Women on Wednesday lecture series. 

Hussain said she saw a lack of Muslim women in leadership roles, and, with a rise in discrimination towards Muslims, she believed something needed to be done, according to the organization’s website. 

“If I can’t see somebody that looks like me in a position of power or leadership, what do you suppose that message is that is being sent to me?” Hussain asked an auditorium of attendees at St. Cloud State.  “There’s no space for me.”
