This year’s honored survivor is Bernie Perryman, of Batteries Plus in Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud. She is a community leader who is involved in Central Minnesota Habitat for Humanity, CentraCare Health Foundation, St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater St. Cloud Public Safety Foundation and United Way of Central Minnesota among others. She is being supported through her cancer treatment by her employees at Batteries Plus, along with friends and family.
Perryman is the Making Strides honored survivor. She is expected to carry the pink St. Cloud State flag during the survivors’ lap of the Oct. 26 fundraising walk.
Perryman will speak at the Cancer Conversations at Oct. 22 in the Alumni Room of the Atwood Memorial Center. The Cancer Conversations will begin after the Pinked Out Picture at noon on the Atwood Porch. The Pinked Out Picture is a group-photo event that celebrates research, programs and survivors. Wear pink and show your support.
Cancer Conversations is a companion event to the Making Strides breast cancer fundraising walk Oct. 26 at St. Cloud State.
Since 2009, the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central Minnesota has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and programs.
Breast cancer is the No. 1 cancer diagnosed in Minnesota women and the No. 2 cause of cancer death. Early detection can mean the difference between a 99 percent chance of five year survival versus a 27 percent chance.
In 2018, the walk at St. Cloud State raised $90,000. The related Real Men Wear Pink effort, earned another $50,000.
Breast cancer by the numbers
The American Cancer Society’s 2019 estimates for breast cancer in the United States:
- About 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women
- About 62,930 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
- About 41,760 women will die from breast cancer
Since 1993, more than 13 million walkers across the United States have raised more than $810 million through Making Strides events.
