College sports, academics a balancing act for top performers: ‘I never wanted to sacrifice one for the other.’

Chicago Tribune — Being a college athlete is difficult. Being a top college student is tough too.

A select few college athletes, however, are able to maintain excellence in both areas. It’s a skill that takes patience and sacrifice.

St. Cloud State redshirt junior wrestler Jake Barzowski has thrived because he learned from his days as a Notre Dame student in Niles. He recently was named to the NWCA Division II Scholar All-America team. 

“With wrestling, I knew what I was getting myself into,” said Barzowski, a Park Ridge resident. “You need to be more self-motivated academically. I think being successful in both areas complement each other.”
