Today we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States with Juneteenth. Short for June Nineteenth, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when federal troops delivered the order to Galveston, Texas that ensured all enslaved people were finally freed. Minnesota has celebrated Juneteenth as a holiday since 1996.
We want to specifically recognize the contributions and accomplishments of our many African American graduates — starting with Webster Hall namesake Ruby Cora Webster in 1909 and continuing with our newest class of graduates this May.
